Still Life Photography

I started a new photography class last week at Wake Tech. Its called Creative Camera I and its the next class after Basic Photography. Each week we have assignments. There will be a topic and then we'll have to bring THREE 8x10 prints to class the following week to show the class. Everybody will get to see our work and the teacher will critique.

This week's assignment was Still Life. If you're like me, I had to google exactly what still life photography was. Wikepedia had a good definition of it-
"Still life photography is the depiction of inanimate subject matter, most typically a small grouping of objects. Still life photography, more so than other types of photography, such as landscape or portraiture, gives the photographer more leeway in the arrangement of design elements within a composition.
Still life photography is a demanding art, one in which the photographers are expected to be able to form their work with a refined sense of lighting, coupled with compositional skills. The still life photographer makes pictures rather than takes them. Knowing where to look for propping and surfaces also is a required skill."

Ok- so I have to admit that I suck at this. Let me take a picture of a baby or people but non life objects where I have to be creative and come up with the shot- yea, I'm not so good at that. This was a struggle for me and I took a ton of shots only to come up with a handful of decent (not really good) ones.

So here's where you come in- wanna help me for the next 8 weeks? Every week I'll have an assignment and I'll need your help picking out the 3 pictures that you like the most that I'll print and bring to class. If you "follow" my blog- just leave me a comment and tell me which ones you like most. Even if you don't follow my blog, leave a comment and leave your name (and if you love me you will follow the blog). I need ALL the help I can get!

practice makes perfect and I can definitely see improvement! yeah. Now for my faves the blueberries (I like the repeating pattern), 1st cherry pic (it makes me feel like summer and the composition is good), and last the sunset slush. Great job girly!

I like the Sunset Slush; the guitar and the apple color with the B&W. Composition on these is first rate, the Slush colors are inviting and the lighting nice and soft, the guitar selective focus is interesting and clever and the Apple one is funny and smart. The pears and markers are good runner-ups. Keep shooting

Don
